My Life During The Summer After I Walked A Mile Essay
During the summer after I turned thirteen, I went on a vacation that changed my entire perspective on life. ââ¬Å"Americans are so spoiled.â⬠I remember hearing my mother proclaim this numerous times growing up. I would shake my head or roll my eyes every time, since I never quite understood what it meant. Of course, I had nothing to compare it to. I grew up in the suburbs in a middle class family. I never wanted for anything. I heard the stories of my mother and her siblings growing up; they lived in filth, they occasionally skipped meals, all seven kids slept huddled together on concrete floors. I heard those stories as if she was saying, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦I walked a mile to school, uphill both waysâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I never could have imagined the reality of what the stories truly meant until I visited my birthplace, the Philippines, for the first time. I was stubborn preteen, and I couldnââ¬â¢t understand why my mother was forcing me to accompany her. I wasnââ¬â¢t familiar with my family in the Philippines and I didnââ¬â¢t speak the language. I tried everything I could to get out of it, nevertheless, my mother insisted it would be a ââ¬Å"memorable experience.â⬠It was a long, twenty-one hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. My uncle, whom I hadnââ¬â¢t remembered ever meeting, picked us up in the terminal. My mother whispered and reminded me to be polite, to honor my elders by remembering to ââ¬Å"blessâ⬠them. What Is Power in International Relations Use Examples...
What is Power in International Relations? Use Examples to Illustrate your Argument Power can be seen as a very complicated concept within International Relations. Power in International Relations does not only refer to military might but also includes economic power, cultural power and also, soft and hard power. Brown defines power as not just one thing but three things all working at the same time. They are; the attributes that the actor has and can use, the relationships between actors and the ability an actor has to influence others and thirdly the actors structure, when its system makes actors behave in a certain way. The first two parts of this definition of power in International Relations are most relevant toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦1977, On Max Webers Definition of Power, Journal of Sociology, Vol. 13, No. 3, p. 231. This coincides with the second part of Browns definition of power. Dahl had a similar definition which stated that power is when an actor can get another to do something they dont want to do or to not do something they might normally do. This is the power of compliance and deterrence. An example of this definition of power in International Relations is the power that Saudi Arabia has over the United Kingdom as the holder of a large amount of natural resources. The third and final aspect of Browns definition of power is structural power. Whilst traditional International Relations theories agree with the first two parts of Browns definition many others, such as Marxism, also see power to exist in an actors structure. Gramsci described how structural power can be seen in the popular culture and the mindset of an actor. He used the overthrowing of capitalism in Italy in the 1920s as an example. He stated that the overthrowing of capitalism in Russia in 1912 was easier as capitalism was so entrenched in 1920s Italy that common sense was dictated by it. He argued that the structure of life needed to be changed for the revolution to come. Simply overthrowing the government was not enough. Structural power can shape the culture and heart of an actor. Colonialism and Young Black Kid Free Essays
At the end of the novel Guerrillas, by V. S Naipaul, Jane, a British woman from London is murdered by Bryant, a young black kid native to the Caribbean island where the novel is based. Behind this murder we could discuss guilt and responsibility through different perspectives. We will write a custom essay sample on Colonialism and Young Black Kid or any similar topic only for you Order Now Can we really hold Bryant responsible for his actions? Jane is a woman who is not content with herself, she is naive as Roche defines her and out of balance-out of touch with herself and the perception of reality. She is careless about peopleââ¬â¢s feelings and ignorant about the consequences of her actions. The fact that she wavers from passion and pleasure through meaningless sexual encounters to rape and violence are all feelings that remind her sheââ¬â¢s alive, nothing less and nothing more. Consequently, being in a post-colonial society full of animosity and frustration, all her mistakes and imprudent actions lead her to her own death. This is an example of how the presence and impact of ââ¬Å"the powerful colonizerâ⬠damaged not only those around him but themselves, in this case Naipaulââ¬â¢s character of Jane is a representation of the indifference and self-centered post-colonial personality of the dominant race in the colonized territories. In conclusion we could argue that Jane did act in a selfish and unconcerned manner. Conscious that she had the alternative of returning to her homeland, escaping the islandââ¬â¢s reality and trying to bring back with her an adventurous experience full of love affairs and careless decisions, she unawarely clashed with the islanders; a people whose disadvantages in life were reflected through anger, despair, emotional repression and a hopelessness that Bryant and Jimmy embodied.Naipaul tries to engage the reader into fee ling empathy towards the latter characters by placing Jimmy first, as the frustrated revolutionary who lives his own lie and only wishes to see himself as a hero that satisfies the oppressed desire of revenge against the powerful dominant, whereas Bryant is the unfortunate native young child overwhelmed by hostility and thwarted dreams who could have become a better person if given the opportunity. In consideration of all these factors and circumstances, who is really to blame? How to cite Colonialism and Young Black Kid, Papers
