My Life During The Summer After I Walked A Mile Essay

During the summer after I turned thirteen, I went on a vacation that changed my entire perspective on life. â€Å"Americans are so spoiled.† I remember hearing my mother proclaim this numerous times growing up. I would shake my head or roll my eyes every time, since I never quite understood what it meant. Of course, I had nothing to compare it to. I grew up in the suburbs in a middle class family. I never wanted for anything. I heard the stories of my mother and her siblings growing up; they lived in filth, they occasionally skipped meals, all seven kids slept huddled together on concrete floors. I heard those stories as if she was saying, â€Å"†¦I walked a mile to school, uphill both ways†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I never could have imagined the reality of what the stories truly meant until I visited my birthplace, the Philippines, for the first time. I was stubborn preteen, and I couldn’t understand why my mother was forcing me to accompany her. I wasn’t familiar with my family in the Philippines and I didn’t speak the language. I tried everything I could to get out of it, nevertheless, my mother insisted it would be a â€Å"memorable experience.† It was a long, twenty-one hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. My uncle, whom I hadn’t remembered ever meeting, picked us up in the terminal. My mother whispered and reminded me to be polite, to honor my elders by remembering to â€Å"bless† them. Embarrassed, and with a slight roll of my eyes, I obediently bowed my head and placed the top of his hand to my forehead. What is Power in International Relations? Use Examples to Illustrate your Argument Power can be seen as a very complicated concept within International Relations. Power in International Relations does not only refer to military might but also includes economic power, cultural power and also, soft and hard power. Brown defines power as not just one thing but three things all working at the same time. They are; the attributes that the actor has and can use, the relationships between actors and the ability an actor has to influence others and thirdly the actors structure,when its system makes actors behave in a certain way. The third and final aspect of Browns definition of power is structural power. Gramsci described how structural power can be seen in the popular culture and the mindset of an actor. He used the overthrowing of capitalism in Italy in the 1920s as an example. At the end of the novel Guerrillas, by V. S Naipaul, Jane, a British woman from London is murdered by Bryant, a young black kid native to the Caribbean island where the novel is based. Conscious that she had the alternative of returning to her homeland, escaping the island’s reality and trying to bring back with her an adventurous experience full of love affairs and careless decisions, she unawarely clashed with the islanders; a people whose disadvantages in life were reflected through anger, despair, emotional repression and a hopelessness that Bryant and Jimmy embodied.Naipaul tries to engage the reader into fee ling empathy towards the latter characters by placing Jimmy first, as the frustrated revolutionary who lives his own lie and only wishes to see himself as a hero that satisfies the oppressed desire of revenge against the powerful dominant, whereas Bryant is the unfortunate native young child overwhelmed by hostility and thwarted dreams who could have become a better person if given the opportunity.
